Buffing Pad Safety Guide

  • If the buffing pad wobbles, if the machine vibrates, if there are loose fittings, or if anything does not seem right-STOP.

  • Be sure that the arbor hole in the center plate of airways is the right one for your buffer. A 5/8" shaft would accommodate a 5/8" center plate.

  • For airways, use flanges. Serious injury can result when they not used. Flanges need to cover all the metal including the darts that hold the material in place. A center plate with a 3" diameter needs a 4" flange.

  • Be sure that the thread on the shaft is in good shape and extends past the flange enough to tighten and secure the flanges. Tighten the nut securely: check and re tightens the nut often.

  • Attach airways to your buffer so that the end of the material (you can see where the material stop) flows in the right direction. As you are buffing, the end of the material can snag and pull away from the darts that hold the material in place.

  • Do not run RPM above approved limits: 1500 to 2000 RPM (arbor speed of 5000 surface feet per minute) is recommended for aluminum and 3600 RPM (8000 SF PM) for stainless steel. Surface feet per minute is calculated by multiplying 1/4 the diameter of the pad times the arbor speed. For instance, an 8" wheel @ 3600 RPM =2 x 3600=7200 SF PM.

  • Test buffing pads by hand to be sure they cannot spin on shaft or spacers after the head has been tightened. Free spinning or loose buffs will break apart or catch fire.

  • Wear safety gear for eye and respiratory protection.
